Worked engineering calculation examples
Each example is a complete calculation sheet. Open it, change any input, and every line, diagram and check below it works itself out again.
Buildings, foundations and connections
- Steel beam - flexure (AISC 360-16): shear, moment and stress diagrams, flexure, shear and deflection checks.
- Pile cap punching shear (ACI 318-19): the size effect factor and all three limits.
- Spread footing: eccentric load, the kern check and the soil pressure under the footing.
- Bolt group (AISC J3): bolt shear, bearing and tearout at the end bolts.
- Lateral earth pressure on a pile: loose over dense sand, redrawn when a friction angle or layer changes.
- Welded girder section: area, neutral axis and moment of inertia read straight off a parametric drawing.
Deep foundations checked with LPILE
- Steel H-pile selection (AASHTO LRFD): every HP shape from the AISC database run in LPILE about both axes, AASHTO combined axial and flexure, shear and deflection, and the lightest pile that passes.
- Caisson and rock socket (AASHTO LRFD): shear with beta and theta, flexural and minimum steel, tension control and a thermal deflection limit, for every candidate diameter and bar layout.
Bridge girders, one to four spans
- HL-93 live load envelopes: truck, tandem, lane and two-truck cases, tenth-point tables and Strength I checks.
- Influence lines: moment, shear and reaction influence lines and a moving 20 ft load.
- Haunched girders: parabolic haunches over the supports, and how much moment moves to the piers.
- Continuous beams: dead load with live load patterned to the worst arrangement.
